Position Overview: This position is responsible for developing and maintaining an Infection Control Program designed to prevent and/or control infections among residents and employees.
Must conduct routine audits with the purpose of identifying problems, developing corrective action plans, implementing those plans, and evaluating the results.
Works closely with all levels of nursing staff to identify improvement methods in resident care and must be familiar with all regulations as they pertain to long term care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Is involved in planning and developing of various activities and plans that focus on the resident’s and family’s satisfaction and positive outcome of case.
- Develops structures within nursing to promote overall improvement in performance.
- Measures performance of nursing activities as related to patient care.
- Routinely assesses level of performance against standards.
- Reviews assessment to see if change in process brought about improvement.
- Facilitates Infection Prevention compliance with governmental regulations, and requirements of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Public Health.
- Collects, analyzes, and reports infection control data to include risk assessment, prevention, and control strategies; makes recommendations and leads quality improvement activities.
- Seeks out problem areas, which need improvement.
- Trains and monitors all aspects of infection control for staff and residents and develops appropriate policies for infection control monitoring.
- Provides in-services to all levels of staff on infection control activities.
- Maintains and develops current nursing policy procedures.
- Skilled at facilitating and guiding key processes with a global perspective.
- Acts as a liaison between the health department and the facility in the event of a disaster or as needed.

Education and/or Experience:
Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing
2+ years’ experience with infection control in a skilled nursing/long term care organization.
Computer skills required including experience with Microsoft Office, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and web-based applications. Expertise in wound care, quality improvement, MDS, falls, hydration, etc. a plus.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Clinical review and management of nurses and nursing assistants working on a unit.
Language Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
License, Certificates, Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse in Michigan.

OSHA OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE CATEGORY: After careful analysis, it has been determined that this position falls into OSHA Occupational Exposure Category A and requires the following protective equipment be worn by anyone filling this position.
GLOVES, GOWNS, MASKS, AND/OR GOGGLES: Training will be provided in how to properly and effectively use any necessary equipment, in addition to education regarding precautionary measures, epidemiology, modes of transmission and prevention of HIV/HBV.
